UTI Treatment - Quick Facts
What is a UTI?
A UTI happens when bad bacteria infect any part of the urinary tract. Your urinary tract includes:
-
Bladder
-
Urethra (the urine pipe from your bladder to the outside of your body)
-
Ureters (urine pipes that connect your kidneys to your bladder)
-
Kidneys

The bladder and urethra are the most common sites of infection. If UTI treatment isn't started quickly, it can lead to a kidney infection (pyelonephritis) which can be very serious and even life-threatening.

What are the symptoms of UTIs?
The symptoms of a UTI can depend on where in the urinary tract the infection is located. We tend to divide the urinary tract into upper (kidneys and ureters) and lower (bladder and urethra) sections.

A lower urinary tract infection can have the following symptoms:
-
Pain or burning when urinating
-
Needing to go to the toilet more often than normal
-
Leakage of urine (incontinence)
-
Feeling like your bladder is still full, even after you just urinated
-
Your urine looks cloudy, bloody or darker than normal
-
Your urine is smelly
-
Lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort
-
Fevers
-
Pain and tenderness in your back and sides

An upper urinary tract infection can have the following symptoms:
-
Pain and/or tenderness in your back and sides
-
Chills
-
Fever
-
Nausea
-
Vomiting

Symptoms of an upper UTI should be taken seriously and UTI treatment should be started urgently.

What causes UTIs?
Bacteria normally cause UTIs, and they can enter your urinary tract in a number of ways. The main cause of UTIs in women is when normal bacteria from the vagina or the anus travel into the urethra. UTIs are more common in women for several reasons:

-
A woman's urethra is shorter than a man's, and it lies in close proximity to the vagina and the anus. This makes it easier for bacteria to access the urethra.
-
Sexual intercourse: during sexual intercourse, bacteria can travel from the vagina or anus to the urethra.
-
Menopause: low estrogen levels after menopause can change the types of normal bacteria in the vagina, making UTIs more likely.
-
A weak pelvic floor can increase the risk of a UTI

Is UTI treatment necessary?
UTI's don't normally self-resolve and will require treatment in order to clear. Antibiotics are the mainstay of UTI treatment and the type of antibiotics required depends on:
-
The bacteria that is causing your UTI
-
Whether it is an upper or a lower urinary tract infection

It is important to complete the course of the antibiotics your doctor prescribes because otherwise, the UTI treatment might be less effective.
